In 2019, I learned about the Native Hawaiians’ resistance against the planned construction of a Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) at Mauna Kea, a sacred Hawaiian location in the Big Island of Hawaii. From July 2019 to July 2020, I documented Mauna Kea Protectors’ resistance and participated in Hawaiian protocols and seminars. I also taught zinemaking workshops with a theme, ‘Mauna Moment.’ Through nine trips, camping out on Mauna Kea and interacting with the Mauna Kea Protectors, I amassed video footage, photographic images, and interviews. The resulting works—an artist book and video—were exhibited and discussed at Fotobokfestival Oslo 2020 and its symposium,The Climate Emergency in 50 Rounds.
