Strand, 2013, video, color, 3:20 min
The word ‘strand’ has two meanings in a dictionary: a thread (yarn) and the land bordering a body of water. The video is divided between interior spaces of the Halsnøy Kloster and exterior spaces of the nearby town and the surroundings of the Kloster. The work was made during an artist residency program in Norway (May 3-22, 2013). The setting is a 150-year-old farm house that was converted into Sunnhordland Museum, a folk museum that was built with ruins from the Monastery of Halsnøy. Halsnøy Kloster celebrated its 850-year anniversary in 2013.
Bunad, 2013, video, color, 1:25 min
Bunad combines still images—self-portraits in traditional Norwegian costume—and Norwegian folk music. When thinking of tradition and identity, I was curious to see how I would look wearing a traditional Norwegian costume. The work was, in part, inspired by the 17th century Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer and was made during an artist residency program at Halsnøy Kloster in Norway.
