Fieldnotes: An Island of Symbiosis (solo show)
Exhibition: July 15 – August 27, 2023
Venue: [FRAME] space of Datz Museum of Art, South Korea
Exhibition Statement
An island is land surrounded by water. It can be reached by boat or a bridge but the island can also be isolated with autonomy. Therefore, an island implies both independence and connection. The life of an artist is like living on one’s own island. It is lonely and solitary but one embraces and lives the life of an artist as if it is fate. As an island is made from eons of time, the concept of time cannot be touched, grasped, nor defined, and as such, a person living on an island must immerse oneself in this indescribable flow of time, in which countless other beings have arisen and then perished.
The exhibition, Fieldnotes: An Island of Symbiosis at the FRAME space of the Datz Museum of Art, provides an opportunity to experience the synergy between the secluded realm of an artist’s island and the external world through meaningful connections forged by art. This connection will transform the isolated space into a space of communication; it is a gesture that attempts to transcend mere symbiosis—a step towards an ameliorative coexistence.
This exhibition introduces works by Minny Lee, mainly from her time during an Artist Residency program at Datz Museum of Art in 2021. Based on her observations of living beings around the museum and inspirations drawn from nature during those forty days, the artist recorded her observations, utilizing photography, video, audio, scan, and journals. Fieldnotes: Part I & Part II—Lee’s artist’s book embodying the experience of the residency—was exhibited at the 2021 edition of the Gwangju Design Biennale. The main space of the FRAME will showcase text, images, and videos from Fieldnotes, while the front and back spaces will be dedicated to exhibiting Lee’s earlier works, including her artist’s books. As a result, this exhibition presents an opportunity to witness the evolution of Lee’s artistic journey.
Fieldnotes: An Island of Symbiosis comprises the concept of an open studio within a defined exhibition space to convey the artist’s thought processes, trials, errors and tribulations; it is an attempt to show a cross section of the process. For an artist, work is like an unknowable road where the artist stumbles upon unexpected encounters, momentary realizations, and introspections of small things, and that very process is the driving force for the artist to continue her work. In that sense, the conversations between the artist and the visitors would also become part of the exhibition. The exhibition tries to convey the importance of the process over results and the artist’s effort to look at her own work with an open-mindedness during that process. As nature does not stop even for a moment, the artist dreams of a ‘flow’ and ‘mutual understanding’ in FRAME space.
